Ressence approaches watchmaking as an exercise in industrial design, where every component is developed around the principle of clarity and intuitive interaction. At the heart of each timepiece is the brand’s proprietary ROCS (Ressence Orbital Convex System), a patented module that replaces traditional hands with rotating discs mounted on a single, co-planar surface beneath a domed sapphire crystal. This creates a seamless, fluid reading of time, where all indications appear to move as part of one continuous system rather than separate mechanical layers.
The manufacturing process is defined by precision engineering and highly specialised components, combining Swiss horological expertise with contemporary design thinking. Ressence is a Belgian-Swiss independent watchmaker founded in 2010 by industrial designer Benoît Mintiens, built on a radical rethinking of how time should be displayed. Rather than using traditional hands, the brand replaces conventional indicators with rotating discs arranged on a single co-planar surface, creating a fluid and highly intuitive reading of time that feels more like an instrument than a traditional watch. This approach, known as “Beyond Hands,” reflects a design philosophy that prioritises clarity, interaction, and a complete redefinition of the user experience in horology.
At its core, Ressence approaches watchmaking as an industrial design discipline, developing every piece around the needs of the wearer rather than inherited horological conventions. Designed in Antwerp and produced in Switzerland, each timepiece is the result of extensive R&D and highly customised components, from its orbital display system (ROCS) to its seamless dial architecture under sapphire crystal.
