The Heritage
As a distinguished watchmaker, John Arnold created some of the most precise marine chronometers of the 18th century, earning multiple awards from the Bureau des Longitudes that further advanced his pursuit of accuracy in timekeeping. As an inventor, he registered numerous patents, including a compensation balance with a bimetallic balance spring and a helical balance spring featuring terminal curves.
Arnold also established simplified chronometer design principles that enabled the efficient production of these instruments, many of which were supplied to His Majesty’s Royal Navy, positioning him as one of its key providers. Among his most significant yet lesser-known contributions is the modern definition of the term “chronometer”, now used to describe a high-precision timepiece whose movement has successfully passed official accuracy certification by an independent authority.
