A New Rhythm in Red Gold
At the crossroads of marine chronometry and contemporary mechanical spectacle, Arnold & Son unveils the DSTB 42 Red Gold—a timepiece that transforms one of the Maison’s most historically meaningful complications into a vivid expression of precision, colour, and architectural balance.
Housed in a 42mm case crafted from 18-carat 5N red gold, this limited edition of 18 pieces embodies the chronometric spirit that defined the instruments John Arnold supplied to the Royal Navy. Its name, DSTB, stands for “Dial-Side True Beat”: a declaration of intent for a watch whose true-beat seconds mechanism is not concealed beneath the dial, but revealed in full view as the visual and mechanical heart of the composition.
Mechanical Ingenuity: The A&S6203 Calibre
At the heart of the DSTB 42 Red Gold beats the Calibre A&S6203, a self-winding Manufacture movement fully developed, machined, assembled, and regulated in-house by Arnold & Son. Conceived specifically for the DSTB collection, this calibre brings the true-beat seconds mechanism to the dial side, adding a further architectural layer to the movement.
Operating at a frequency of 4 Hz and offering a 55-hour power reserve, the A&S6203 calibre drives the seconds hand in 60 precise jumps per minute. Powered by a 22-carat gold oscillating weight, it combines automatic efficiency with a complication deeply rooted in the history of precision timekeeping.
True-Beat Seconds: A Precise Jump
The true-beat seconds function recalls the marine instruments of John Arnold’s era, when certain escapements naturally beat at one oscillation per second. In a modern wristwatch operating at 4 Hz, such a display requires a dedicated mechanism, similar in spirit to an escapement, to transform continuous mechanical energy into a distinct one-second rhythm.
On the DSTB 42 Red Gold, this mechanism is fully displayed on the dial side. Its openworked three-dimensional bridges, crafted in 18-carat gold, carry the long, fine seconds hand across the graduated arc stretching between 9 and 12 o’clock. Each jump is deliberate, steady, and precise, turning chronometric discipline into a visible performance.
A Dial of Mint Green and White Opal
The identity of the DSTB 42 Red Gold is expressed through a grained dial with “Mint Green” PVD treatment, offering a fresh and luminous stage for the mechanical display. At 5 o’clock, the off-centred hours-and-minutes subdial in white opal creates a soft, elegant counterpoint to the complexity of the true-beat mechanism.
This asymmetrical layout is not an arbitrary displacement, but a deliberate composition. Balanced by the seconds display opposite it, and anchored by the crown at 3 o’clock, the dial reveals Arnold & Son’s ability to unite technical necessity with aesthetic harmony.

THREE FOUNDING PRINCIPLES
ASTRONOMY, CHRONOMETRY AND WORLD TIME
Astronomy, Chronometry, and World Time form the core identity of Arnold & Son. Through finely crafted complications and subtle references to its maritime heritage, the Maison continues to draw inspiration from these three founding principles, each one reflecting the enduring legacy of John Arnold.
